FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) is taking its concerns about wind energy projects to Prince George for presentation to gain support from other municipalities.

According to a report presented at the PRRD’s March 19th regional board meeting, the regional district has submitted a resolution to the North Central Local Government Association (NCLGA) conference, to be held from May 20th to 22nd in Prince George, calling for clarity on taxation frameworks for wind energy projects.

“Clean energy projects, including wind farms, receive tax exemptions and incentives that allow such projects to contribute less toward local taxation despite considerable environmental and infrastructure impacts,” the report stated.

“The lack of clear, consistent fiscal framework limits local governments’ ability to support regional services and manage cumulative effects.”

For several years, the PRRD has vocalised its concerns about wind energy projects in the region, expressing frustration and a sense of a lack of clear communication and legislation.

This comes after the province announced in February 2025 wind energy projects no longer need to undergo environmental assessments and all legislative power was given to the BC Energy Regulator (BCER).

The BCER presented its proposed legislative framework to the PRRD in November 2025, noting a planned submission date of March 2026 for the policies to be approved by the province.

The regional district has received notice of five new wind energy projects since the 2025 Union of British Columbia Municipalities, and in an interview on an episode of This Week in the Peace on March 20th, board chair Brad Sperling stated that seven wind energy projects are in various stages of development within the PRRD.

The resolution was approved by the directors and will be submitted to the NCLGA for consideration at the annual general meeting and convention, to be held at the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre.
