Additional snowfall warnings issued for Fort Nelson and Pine Pass

Twenty to 30 cm of total snowfall is expected in Fort Nelson on December 14th and 15th, while Pine Pass will likely see about 10 cm with an additional risk of freezing rain.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — More snow is expected in Fort Nelson and Pine Pass.

In a December 14th snowfall warning, Environment Canada said two rounds of heavy snowfall will bring total amounts of 20 to 30 cm to Fort Nelson.

The first round of snowfall is expected to begin early in the morning on Sunday, December 14th, before ending early in the afternoon. The second round is expected to begin that night, lasting into Monday morning.

In Pine Pass and Williston, about 10cm of snow is expected by noon on Sunday, with an “increasing” risk of freezing rain into the evening.

“Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow,” Environment Canada said. “Visibility will likely be reduced at times.”

The agency also reminded drivers weather in the mountains can change suddenly, resulting in “hazardous” driving conditions.

Under Environment Canada’s colour-coded alert system, both advisories are considered yellow level.

Yellow alerts indicate hazardous weather that may cause damage, disruptions or health impacts. These alerts are typically moderate, localized, short-term and are the most common.

The ‘Shift Into Winter’ website by Road Safety at Work is recommended for drivers who plan on driving in wintry conditions to take precautions, including proper use of winter tires and tire chains.
