FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The Fort St. John Senior Flyers’ game against the Dawson Creek Canucks has been postponed until next month.

A neutral-site game, the matchup between the North Peace Hockey League (NPHL) on Saturday, December 13th has been rescheduled for Thursday, January 15th due to inclement weather.

Environment Canada issued a cold weather alert for the North Peace region on Thursday evening.

Temperatures on Saturday evening are supposed to reach highs of -24 C with snowfall, prompting the postponement.

Flyers president Paul van Nostrand told Energeticcity.ca the final decision was made on Friday morning, December 12th, as the game is due to be played at the Chetwynd and District Recreation Centre.

“[The Canucks] were worried about travel for their volunteers going from Dawson Creek to Chetwynd for that game,” said van Nostrand. “It was talked about yesterday, but Dawson Creek needed to confirm they could actually get ice for the 15th. It wasn’t 100 per cent confirmed until this morning.”

Van Nostrand said the neutral site game is a bit of a homecoming for players, as several current members of both clubs live in Chetwynd.

The game is just the latest victim of the freezing conditions in the Peace region. On Thursday, School Districts 60 and 81 cancelled buses for Friday, and the Fort St. John Public Library said it will shut down for Friday and Saturday.

More details about the Fort St. John Senior Flyers can be found on the club’s Facebook page.
