Fort St. John Public Library to close during extreme cold

Cold temperatures expected on Friday, December 12th and Saturday, December 13th, 2025 have prompted the Fort St. John Library’s planned closure.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The Fort St. John Public Library will be closed on Friday and Saturday as extreme cold settles over the region.

In a Facebook post, the library said low temperature forecasts on Friday, December 12th and Saturday, December 13th prompted the closure.

All programs scheduled for those two days have also been cancelled.

Environment Canada forecasts a low of -40 C with wind chill on Friday morning, with a risk of frostbite “in minutes”. Saturday’s temperature is projected to be around -22 C, with no wind chill forecast as of yet.

“We apologize for the inconvenience,” the library wrote.

While the library is shutting its doors due to safety concerns, the North Peace Cultural Centre (NPCC) plans to remain open.

“At this time, the Cultural Centre has no plans to close on Friday or Saturday.” Oliver Hachmeister, the NPCC’s executive director, told Energeticcity.ca.
