FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Local fight promoter Justin Donally has decided to return to his “country roots” in promoting his next fight card at a country bar in April.

His Fivestar Fight League will present its next event – Frontier Fight Night – on April 12th at the New Frontier Bar and Grill in downtown Fort St. John.

Donally, who is also the head coach at Fivestar Boxing Academy, said he wanted to “do something different” after offering cards at the Pomeroy Hotel and Conference Centre for the past several years.

“I’ve been doing [cards] at the Pomeroy,” said Donally. “It’s been great. No issues. I was speaking to [ownership] at the Frontier and with [them] reopening and getting back into the community, [this opportunity] just fell into my lap.

“I actually went to a fight card in Olds, Alberta. [It was] in an old country-style bar, kind of similar to [the Frontier]. I’ve been doing the same thing for the last little while, I felt it was getting kind of stale, and wanted to do something fun, a little different and energetic.”

The smaller venue means fewer tickets are available. Donally says tickets and VIP tables are “going fast.”

“I’ve done events selling everything from 1,500 to 1,600 people,” said Donally. “When it feels like it’s empty, you know. I’m used to selling 500 to 600 tickets so this is a downsize.”

A three-fight preliminary card followed by a 12-bout main card is scheduled for April 12th. Like all events, Donally says the card is subject to change between now and fight night.

The main event is scheduled to be Nick Young facing Ranford Callao in a welterweight (147 lb) bout.

Young is a native of Fort St. John who moved to Vancouver Island to train with Parksville’s Le State Boxing.

Meanwhile, Callao trains out of Southpaw Boxing Gym and Goldenstars Boxing in Calgary.

“The tight atmosphere, the country atmosphere:  everything was appealing to me,” said Donally. “I think people really enjoy my shows and what we do. This will give it a little extra flare and something different.”

Frontier Fight Night will take place at the New Frontier at 10320 100th Avenue on April 12th.  Doors open at 5:00 p.m., with the preliminary bouts at 6 p.m.

Tickets are available at Fivestar Boxing Academy, Crooked Corner Clothing or by calling the gym at (250) 793-0988.
