Young motocross sensation caps off milestone season

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The Peace Motocross Association’s recent event in Dawson Creek earlier this month marked the end of a successful season for local motocross racer Cruz Gordon.

Melissa Gordon, Cruz’s mother, says the 12-year-old motocross sensation placed first in 10 rounds of racing in his age group between 65cc and 85cc, earning himself championship titles in each.

“Cruz had a flawless year in 65 and 85 class,” said Gordon. 

On the same weekend, Cruz won second place in a super-mini race, where he raced against 16-year-old competitors, and earned himself a championship title in that category as well.

Cruz says this year marks his best season in motocross, and he will now focus on various other sports until racing picks up again next year. 

“I go to boxing and use it as my crosstraining,” said Cruz. 

“There are also races down in Chilliwack where you race in a barn indoors, it’s called arena cross, and I’ll do some of that too.”

Cruz also recently made the grade nine volleyball team at his school.

In June, Cruz competed in the Western Canadian Amateur Nationals in Kamloops, placing first in 65cc, second in open class, and fourth in 85cc. 

In August, Cruz competed in the Canadian Amateur Grand National Championships in Walton, Ontario. He placed third in 65cc open, fourth in his age group in 65cc, and eighth in his age group in 85cc.

Cruz rode a dirtbike for the first time when he was four years old and hopes to one day compete in larger-scale competitions in the United States.
