Fort St. John Huskies sign Yukon-based defenceman for training camp

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — In the search for another defenceman, the Fort St. John Huskies decided to look way up north.

The runners-up in the Strike Group North West Junior Hockey League in 2025-26, the team announced it had signed Whitehorse, Yukon, player Brody Nash in a Facebook post on July 18.

With the announcement, the team states it is “continuing the pipeline” of Yukon-based products that have suited up for the Huskies in recent years.

Nash joins a team boasting both current Huskies forwards Jonny Timmons and Zander Underhill, who also hail from Whitehorse. 

Additionally, former Huskies Ashton Underhill and Matt McCarthy also have ties to the Yukon.

Huskies’ head coach Todd Alexander spoke to Energeticcity.ca about what makes players from the Yukon so attractive to the organization.

“A lot of Yukon players fit down here just because they live the same sort of lifestyle as we do,” said Alexander. “[They are] hard-working, honest people, and we don’t get a lot of the baggage from these types of players.”

“The coaches up in Whitehorse have been doing a good job with a lot of these players as well. They are quick learners. They are able to adapt a lot quicker than some of the other kids, and I feel it’s just been a really good fit for those players coming to our organization.”

Despite his only viewing being in-game film, Alexander describes the Huskies’ newest pickup as “the complete package.”

“He’s an excellent skater,” said Alexander. “He’s not afraid of physicality. He’s got a great first pass coming out of the zone. We just could not be more excited to have a player that we feel is a complete package.”

“[Nash’s] coaching staff that he’s had for three years in Yukon, they all speak very highly of his leadership skills, and not just his hockey skills.”

Nash will join the team after last playing with the Whitehorse Mustangs U-18 program.

The Mustangs had moderate success in 2025-26, representing the Yukon at the 2026 Arctic Winter Games and advancing to the Chilliwack U18 Rep Tournament Tier 2 finals, where they fell to the Portland, Ore., team, the Cascade Selects.

Last week, the Huskies signed fellow defencemen Norman Lacquette and Jonas Letourneau, but Alexander said Lacquette due to his fastball commitments, will not be at camp.
