Avalanche hazard closes highway through Pine Pass

Highway 97 has been closed through the Pine Pass due to a level four avalanche forecast in the area.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C., —  An avalanche hazard forecast has been issued for the Pine Pass, resulting in a closure of the local highway. 

According to the province’s Ministry of Transportation and Transit, Highway 97 was closed just before 9 a.m. on December 10th.

According to DriveBC, the highway is closed between Powder King Road and Old Hasler Road for a span of 32.1 kilometres. 

The ministry explained small avalanches have filled catchments at Link Creek, and further incidents are expected to impact Highway 97.

The forecast level is four, which is described as “high avalanche hazard.”
