DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — A Peace region golf course will tee-off the next generation of golf enthusiasts in a couple of weeks.

Sebastian Rigsby is the golf professional at the nine-hole course who promises a week of excitement, learning and fun.

Rigsby initially ran the program before moving to Alberta in order to get his professional certification.
“[Our course] is more targeted to beginners [and] intermediate golfers, because it’s only nine holes,” said Rigsby. “We have a big driving range and a good facility for practising.
“[We] did a camp here in July, and that one sold out. I could only host 12 kids, but there were a couple on the waitlist. This August one hasn’t filled up yet.”
Studies show playing golf has a positive effect on not only a person’s activity levels, but also their mental wellbeing, something Rigsby agrees with.

“For these juniors, they’re young [and] don’t have a big ego,” said Rigsby. “Golf is a really good sport to almost learn how to control your emotions and learn how to play against yourself. You’re not really playing anyone else. You’re trying to get better.”
Rigsby said “he doesn’t see a cell phone,” while he’s out with the kids and the game also allows them to develop social skills.
Fundamentals, including proper club grip, short play, swinging techniques and golf etiquette will be covered in the course. Â
Additionally, giveaways will happen throughout the program, including for gloves, balls and tees. Lunch will be provided on the camp’s final day.
The Happy Putters camp takes place at Farmington Fairways at 5764 Highway 97 from August 18th to 22nd, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and costs $315 per child.
