FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — City council is supporting a local farmers’ institute in a grant to cover construction costs for a local grain storage project.

The City of Fort St. John has issued a letter of support for the North Pine Farmers’ Institute (NPFI) in an application to the Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT) Economic Infrastructure program.

If the NPFI’s application was granted, the program would provide $300,000 for the NPFI’s terminal bin storage expansion project in Fort St. John.

“This project will have numerous positive impacts on our region, including benefiting local producers, streamlining production and access to markets, improving sustainability and job creation,” the letter stated.

In March 2025 the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) wrote a similar letter of support for the NPFI’s application for a grant to upgrade Fort St. John’s last remaining grain elevator, which was purchased by the institute in 2012.
