FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — In the last week of 2024, Peace River North MLA Jordan Kealy has shared his thoughts on the past year and his political goals.

Kealy has said that his journey to becoming the region’s new MLA has “been a whirlwind so far” as he is learning the roles and responsibilities.

“It’s interesting when you take some downtime and spend some time with loved ones,” Kealy explains.

“You see what’s around you and how your life was at one point. If you want to make a difference in the bigger picture, you get into politics,” says Kealy.

In October, Kealy secured a landslide victory in the 2024 Provincial General Election, taking more than 70 per cent of votes.

Kealy says BC Conservative Party leader John Rustad played an essential role in him becoming MLA.

“[Rustad] was critical. He’s got the experience, he’s got the knowledge, he is a politician. To have a party leader in place that’s honest and genuine, that knows how to navigate those scenarios, that makes a big difference,” says Kealy.

Since winning his seat, Kealy has been appointed as a Critic and the Shadow Minister of Agriculture.

Kealy says his only disappointment of the year is that he cannot help people in the capacity he would like due to his party failing to win a majority in parliament.

“My main goal of getting into politics is to be able to help my constituents and help people around me that need it.”

Kealy says he will fully embrace the job despite the election results and is steadily “growing” into his new position.

“The thing that I appreciate the most, that actually makes me enjoy my job is actually being able to fix things and help people,” said Kealy.

Kealy looks forward to the upcoming by-election for Electoral Area B, saying he sees many good people put their names forward in the nomination process.

However, Kealy says he will not endorse any candidate to maintain a fair electoral process and allow the people of the district to choose the candidate they want.

As Kealy departs his former position as Area B Director, he believes the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) is doing its best and encourages the board to keep representing the region.

Fort St. John Mayor Lilia Hansen has also shared her thoughts on 2024 and her vision for the new year, which can be read here.
