Site C employment decreases in August as project wraps up

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – BC Hydro is reporting a predicted decrease in employment numbers at Site C for the month of August as work is finalized on the project. 

According to Site C employment documents for the month of August, 2,026 workers were working at the Site C workplace. Of those, 71 per cent or 1,441 were B.C. primary residents.

Approximately 22 per cent of workers, or 454 individuals, were Peace River Regional District (PRRD) residents.

Compared to July’s reports, total employment at the worksite has decreased by 967 workers, or 32 per cent. There was also a 43-worker decrease in PRRD residents working at Site C. 

In August, 294 women worked on the Site C project, 11 less than in July. There was also a decrease in apprentices present in the workplace in August, with 196 reported in comparison to the 209 present in July. 

There was also a minor decrease in the number of workers who voluntarily declared themselves Indigenous, with 125 reported in August compared to 129 in July.

BC Hydro has been predicting a decrease in workers present at the site due to the project approaching completion in recent reports.

As of October 23rd, the reservoir filling is nearing completion at 90 per cent full, and according to Bob Gammer, Manager of Site C Community Relations, it is on track to be finished this fall.
