The 1980s are the theme for Fort Nelson ladies’ golf tournament

While the tournament at the nine-hole course is an annual event, its organizer says it rarely has a theme like 2026.

FORT NELSON, B.C. — Get prepared to jump in your DeLorean and take a trip back to the 1980’s – sort of – at Fort Nelson’s Poplar Hills Golf course to begin July.

The nine-hole, 2,500-plus yard course will host its 45th annual ladies’ best-ball tournament, complete with a ‘back to the 1980’s’ theme over two days beginning on Saturday, July 4th.

Participants are encouraged to dress up in their best themed threads to capture the spirit of the decade, according to Aymee Belfour.

Belfour is the president of the course’s ladies league and is still relatively new to golf, having taken up the sport only five years ago.

“I am just trying to bring more fun back into it,” explained Belfour. “ [To] get a new generation of kids coming into golf.”

“That has been my goal and [to] just make it fun. [I have] been learning as I go.”

While Poplar Hills has held annual ladies’ tournaments, a theme has not been part of the itinerary on a regular basis, said Belfour.

The event will feature each 4-member group of ladies in a best-ball format, with teammates following their individual balls.

The fewest number of strokes on a hole counts as the score for the entire team.  Each round during the weekend will be two rounds through the course, totalling 18 holes.

Awards will be presented for the best-dressed and most sportsmanlike teams, while a 50/50 raffle for a golf bag and a draw with different-priced prizes at each table will also take place.

“We have [a] prize table that you can buy tickets for,” said Belfour. “[There is] a $2 table, $5 table, and a $10 table, which obviously range in different things.”

Breakfast will be provided on both days, while a unique form of course play will take place after dinner Saturday evening: the horse race event.

Groups of two will pay $10 each, with a putter and one club, to play a series of holes. The highest score is knocked out after each hole. The winners receive the proceeds of the buy-in.

In 2025, Balfour said they completed six holes before darkness suspended the horse race, adding, “It is for the giggles.”

Entry to the event depends on Poplar Hills membership: a one-day entry fee is $85 for members and $100 for non-members, while a two-day entry fee is $115 for members and $140 for non-members, covering green fees and meals.

The ‘Back to the 1980s’ ladies golf tournament takes place on Saturday, July 4th, and Sunday, July 5th, at the Poplar Hills Golf and Country Club at 91 Radar Road in Fort Nelson.

To enter or for more details, call Belfour at 250-500-1155 or email entry fees via e-transfer at fngolf@hotmail.com, including your name in the e-transfer note. Entries are open until Friday, June 26th.
