Active shooter in school in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., police say
TUMBLER RIDGE, BRITISH COLUMBIA — Police say they’re at the scene of what they describe as a “confirmed active shooter incident” at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in east-central British Columbia.
RCMP say the “original suspect” is believed to be dead, but officers are working to determine whether a second suspect is involved.
Police say they have no confirmation of the number of people injured or requiring assistance.
They say residents in Tumbler Ridge are asked to stay inside as additional police resources are being deployed to the area from neighbouring detachments.
RCMP say that no one should approach a potential suspect and should call 911.
The Peace River South School District said Tuesday that it is aware of the lockdown and secure at both the secondary school and the Tumbler Ridge Elementary school.
Larry Neufeld, the member of the legislature for Peace River South, says he’s been told of the situation and his thoughts are with residents as it continues to develop.
“I have been in direct contact with the solicitor general to receive updates and to ensure all necessary provincial resources are being made available to support local law enforcement and emergency responders,” Neufeld said in a statement.
He said public safety is the absolute priority and he urges everyone in the area to follow RCMP instructions, remain sheltered, and rely only on official updates.
The provincial government website lists Tumbler Ridge Secondary School as having 175 students from Grades 7 to 12.
