Frigid temperatures in Fort Nelson area continuing on Christmas Day

Environment Canada extended its temperature alert into midday on Christmas Day 2025.

FORT NELSON, B.C. – Environment Canada says frigid temperatures hovering around -45 C will continue into at least midday in Fort Nelson this Christmas.

The weather authority made an initial alert on December 23rd, saying the conditions will affect Atlin, Dease Lake, the Muncho Lake-Stone Mountain Park area and Fort Nelson.

Part of the alert reads: “Light winds combined with frigid temperatures will continue to give windchill values near -45 C this morning. A slight moderation of temperatures is expected near midday.”

According to Environment Canada’s alert, the impact level is considered ‘moderate’ with the forecast confidence indicated at ‘high’. Its colour-coding system puts it at a ‘yellow.’

Yellow suggests hazardous weather which may cause damage, disruptions or health impacts. 

The statement concludes by advising residents to “cover up.”

“Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.”

It urges outdoor workers to take regularly scheduled breaks to warm up, and suggests emergency supplies such as blankets and jumper cables be kept inside vehicles.
