Winter jackets and boots in demand as Taylor Coats for Kids program grows this year

TAYLOR, B.C. — One hundred and fifty pieces of winter gear have been collected to help families in the Taylor community as part of a Coats for Kids program. 

Since the start of September, the city collected, professionally cleaned and displayed coats on tables at the Taylor District Ice Centre for families in the community. 

Sherri Maycock, the district’s recreation programmer, told Energeticy.ca: “We advertise it and then whoever needs any sort of gear, they just come and help themselves to whatever they need.” 

The district received a bit of everything from winter coats to touques, gloves, a few boots and also snow pants. 

Talking about how the program has grown compared to last year, Maycock said: “We definitely received more donations this year.

“I feel like the need was a little bit more this year as well. 

“The program was definitely utilized more at the beginning of the season, as soon as it started to get cold.” 

Winter jackets and boots were in demand when compared to the last program the district ran in 2024.

With the program ending on December 5th, any additional winter gear will be donated to Fort St. John Women’s Resource Society. 

Additionally, the district is also running multiple other festive-themed events like the Skate with Santa on December 5th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the District Ice Centre and a Christmas-themed bingo on December 16th from 7 p.m at the Taylor Community Hall. Both these events are free.
