TAYLOR, B.C. — Staff members with the District of Taylor are preparing for an annual program to help families in the area provide winter clothing for kids in need.

Donations for the district’s ‘Coats for Kids’ program will be accepted starting on Tuesday, September 2nd.

Sherri Maycock, the district’s recreation programmer, says the initiative collects donations of new and used winter clothing from residents and later redistributes them.

“We collect winter items — anything from boots, mitts, toques, snowpants and jackets,” Maycock explained in an interview. “They can be either brand new or gently used, and we will bring them in to get drycleaned, then we have everything available for pickup at the District Ice Centre.”

Items will be distributed for free at the ice centre on a first-come-first-served basis beginning October 1st.

According to Maycock, the district tends to receive disproportionate numbers of some items compared to others.

“I would say boots are definitely in high demand,” she said. “We do receive a lot of jackets and mitts, boots is something that we definitely see a need of.”

Once donations open on September 2nd, residents will be invited to drop off items at the district’s Community Services Hub, located at 9896 Cherry Avenue West at the back of the Community Hall.

The district will continue to accept donations until roughly the end of November, and items will be available to residents at the ice centre until January 2026.

Afterwards, according to Maycock, any excess, leftover items will be donated to the Fort St. John’s Women’s Resource Society.

Residents with questions about the program are urged to call the Community Services Hub at 250-789-2828.
