DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — Various communities across the Peace region are making preparations for their annual property tax sales.

Under the Local Government Act, municipalities are required to auction off properties with three years of unpaid property taxes to residents annually as part of a process called a “tax sale.”

All properties available in a tax sale are auctioned for their “upset price” — equal to all outstanding taxes, penalties, interest, a five per cent fee for the tax sale itself and fees for the provincial Land Title and Survey Authority.

All properties involved in a tax sale are sold as-is with no warranties or guarantees from the municipality.

Residents can avoid having their properties sold by paying their overdue property taxes. The deadline to pay in order to avoid having a property sold varies between communities.

Each community is having its tax sale on Monday, September 29th at 10 a.m.

Dawson Creek’s will be held in its council chambers at City Hall, Hudson Hope’s will be held at the district’s municipal hall, the NRRM will have its tax sale in its municipal office’s council chambers and Pouce Coupe’s tax sale will be held at the village office.

Lists of available properties can be found on the City of Dawson Creek and NRRM websites and the Facebook pages for the District of Hudson’s Hope and Village of Pouce Coupe.

Details have yet to be announced regarding tax sales in the districts of Taylor and Tumbler Ridge.
