City to mark International Overdose Awareness Day and Literacy Month

The City of Fort St. John council is marking International Overdose Awareness Day and Literacy Month with official proclamations in 2025.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The City of Fort St. John is preparing to mark International Overdose Awareness Day and Literacy Month this month and next. 

During the City of Fort St. John August 11th regular meeting, council unanimously voted to proclaim August 31st International Overdose Awareness Day in conjunction with a collaborative event being held on that day in Festival Plaza. 

Moms Stop the Harm (MSTH), the Fort St. John Friendship Society, Urban Systems and the Nenan Dane Zaa Deh Zona Family Services Society will be hosting a day of awareness on August 31st, including naloxone training by Northern Health, traditional drumming and dancing and an evening vigil.

The city also approved MSTH and the society’s request that the stage in Festival Plaza be lit up in purple to “honour the day.”

In addition to this, the council also approved a month-long proclamation request from the Fort St. John Literacy Society to make September Literacy Month. 

A delegation from the society additionally requested the Centennial Park stage be lit up in purple on September 8th in recognition of International Literacy Day, which was also approved by council.
