FORT ST. JOHN, B.C — The regional district is continuing over $28 million in work to improve the Charlie Lake sewer system.

During the Peace River Regional District board of directors July 17th meeting, a contract award for sewer valve replacements was approved.

The contract pertains to five sewer valves in Charlie Lake, which will be repaired by S Young Enterprises, a general contractor based in Fort St. John, at a cost of $270,000 excluding taxes. The money has been reallocated from the Area C Community Gas Works Fund.

This decision comes after a presentation from McElhanney, a consulting company with an office in Fort St. John, to the PRRD in 2023 recommended significant updates and repairs to the community’s sewer system.

At the time, the recommended changes were estimated to cost more than $28 million in total.

Since then, tenders have been awarded for improvement projects in Charlie Lake, including almost $1 million in work on the Charlie Lake Lift Station and the installation of a new low-pressure sewer line.

While the district did not specify when work would be conducted by S. Young Enterprises or how long the project would take to complete, it stated construction notifications would be sent to nearby and impacted properties ahead of work starting.
