$480K in funding a year approved for Fort St. John non-profit organizations
The City of Fort St. John has approved $480,000 in total per year in grant funding for the local library and historical society until 2027.
FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Two charity and non-profit organizations in Fort St. John have been approved for significant grant funding from city council for the next three years.
At the March 24th regular meeting of the City of Fort St. John council, two annual fee-for-service grants were approved for the Fort St John Public Library and the North Peace Historical Society from 2025 to 2027.
According to a report from staff, both the library and the society provide “important services within the community,” and rely on fee-for-service funding for continued stability.
The library is a registered charity and lending library association, offering services to the residents of Fort St. John and Electoral Areas B and C of the Peace River Regional District (PRRD).
In its application to the city, the library initially requested $515,000 starting in 2025, a 12.6 per cent increase in funding from 2024, however staff recommended council provides $450,000, maintaining the amount historically provided.
The fee-for-service grant money will go towards supporting library operations such as wages, collection purchasing, rent, programming and service contracts.
The North Peace Historical Society is also a non-profit organization, and operates the Fort St. John Museum to “preserve the local history.”

The society also requested an increase in funding during its application, requesting $45,000, an increase of 33.3 per cent compared to the amount awarded in 2024, an increase which was not approved by council. The funds would be used for staffing, program and archival supplies, utilities and exhibitions.
The council approved annual grants of $450,000 to the library and $30,000 to the historical society, for a total of $480,000 a year for three years.
This amount is the same awarded in 2024.
