TAYLOR, B.C. — The District of Taylor proclaimed March 26th, 2024, as Purple Day to spread awareness of people living with epilepsy.

Deirdre Syms, the executive director of the BC Epilepsy Society, requested the proclamation in a letter council addressed during their meeting on February 26th.

“Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions, however, it currently has the least recognition in society,” said Syms.

“International Purple Day is a time when people in countries around the world take part in events and activities to raise much-needed awareness of epilepsy.”

According to the Epilepsy Society website, their goal is to improve the lives of people living with epilepsy with support and resources.

“We support the over 50,000 people living with epilepsy in BC and their families, friends and loved ones and work to raise awareness of epilepsy in the communities in which we live,” said Syms.

Taylor and other communities are encouraged to wear purple and host events acknowledging epilepsy during Purple Day.

During Monday’s council meeting, Mayor Brent Taillefer spoke on Purple Day’s history and its benefits for the community.

“Purple Day can improve the quality of life of people living with epilepsy, create a society that embraces the beauty of difference and help us understand how we can all come together to make the world a better place,” said Taillefer.

The day of awareness was founded by Cassidy Megan from Nova Scotia, who wanted people living with epilepsy to know they were not alone.
