FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The North Peace Secondary School (NPSS) cross-country team travelled to Vanderhoof to compete in zones last weekend.

According to athletic director Jaclyn McNicol, new rules were implemented this year, which put each school into tiers rather than one large group. This provides more opportunities for athletes to qualify for provincials.

The Grizzles competed against athletes from Prince George Secondary School, Lake City Secondary School and Correlieu Secondary School.

The senior division started the day off competing in a 5.3-kilometre race.

From the senior boys, Griffin McCue placed fourth with a time of 18:51, running at a pace of three minutes and twenty seconds.

Austin MacGregor placed eighth with a time of 20:10, followed by Hugo Lefebvre in tenth with a time of 20:38.

Then, from the senior girls, Isabelle Bojzcuk placed eighth with a time of 27:05.

In the junior division, Adam Dick competed in a 4.3-kilometre race and finished with a time of 17:37, which qualified him for provincials.

All of the above Grizzlies achieved personal best times while competing at zones and qualified for provincials, which takes place in Surrey on November 4th.

In Grizzlies volleyball, the junior boys team travelled to Prince George to compete at College Heights Secondary last weekend.

The boys faced a challenging group of athletes, which allowed them to develop their volleyball skills and knowledge, said McNicol.

The middles played an important role in shutting down the big hitters on the opposing team. The setters had optimal touches, and the serving team stayed consistent throughout the weekend.

Players of the Weekend were awarded to Simon Louie and Elijah Lindh, who were consistent with their hitting and kept the other team on their toes with their power, said McNicol.

Back home at NPSS, the senior girls team hosted a fundraiser where they coached up-and-coming volleyballers from grades three to eight.

Up next, the Grizzlies volleyball teams are set to host a home tournament on October 27th and 28th.

Games begin at NPSS on Friday afternoon from 3:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.

The senior boys soccer team will travel to Prince George to compete in the provincial zone qualifier on October 29th and 30th.
