Athletes achieve medals and personal bests at Special Olympics Summer Games

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — The Special Olympics BC team from Fort St. John travelled to Kamloops for the 2017 Special Olympics BC Summer Games on July 7^th and 8^th.

This year’s event was the largest SOBC provincial games ever, with over 1,600 athletes participating in 11 events. Eight athletes from the Energetic City competed at the games: Wyatt Turney and Nicholas Mitchell both competed in bowling, Mykaela Stewart and Britni Renaud both competed in rhythmic gymnastics, Sheryl Jakubowski was the lone athletics competitior, and Miranda Laboucane, Tina Tompkins, and Russell Wheat all competed in swimming.

The team did themselves and all of their Fort St. John supporters proud with a fantastic showing of almost personal bests and 19 medals out of a possible 35.

Jakubowski finished with one gold and one silver medal. Renaud won a silver and bronze medal, while Stewart won four gold medals and a silver in gymnastics. In the pool, Laboucane won one medal of each type, Tompkins added a silver medal, and Wheat won a gold, a silver, and two bronze medals. Turney and Mitchell each won a silver medal in five-pin bowling.
