DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — The completion date of the Dawson Creek and District Hospital replacement has been moved forward as construction remains ahead of schedule.

According to a newsletter by Northern Health dated April 30th, the substantial completion date of the replacement hospital has been moved from November 30th, 2026 to September 29th, 2026.

The newsletter said construction is making steady progress, and the project is moving deeper into the finishing and commissioning phase.

Exterior work is in its final stages; the building envelope is complete, and minor items will wrap up in May.

Interior finishes, including flooring, fixtures, device installations and final surface work, are progressing, with some areas complete and others nearing completion.

System start-up work is ongoing, including energization of permanent lighting and air balancing.

Future work will focus on completing the remaining interior finishes, closing outstanding installation systems and commissioning and testing activities across the building’s systems.

“As the systems are balanced, energized and verified, the project will move from active construction to operational readiness,” the newsletter said. “These efforts will support upcoming turnover activities and help ensure the building is prepared for safe, reliable day‑to‑day use.”

Northern Health said the ‘substantial completion date’ is when construction has finished and the contractor hands over the building to Northern Health.

This means that although construction is finished, the hospital is not open or operational.

Post this, the project enters the transition period, during which it is prepared for patient care and includes moving equipment and supplies, testing the building and IT systems, completing safety checks, and supporting training and orientation so that clinical and operational spaces are ready.

Northern Health anticipates the hospital’s opening day in early 2027, but the exact date has not yet been confirmed.

This date is when the new hospital officially begins operations, patients are transferred and the existing facility becomes inactive.

“Exterior work is in its final stages, with the building envelope complete and minor items wrapping up this month.”
