FORT NELSON, B.C. — While it may not be the definition of an easy summer jog, a new endurance race in Fort Nelson is certain to test physical limits.

The Summit Run-it Further race takes place on Saturday, June 20th at Stone Mountain Provincial Park, located west of the town.

It will run concurrently with the Summit Run-it, an annual 12-kilometre event beginning at the Summit Tower Road access point located in the area of the park.

The race itself is a four-lap race run over a 12-kilometre course, with those brave enough to conquer the entire distance receiving a shiny, custom-made belt buckle highlighting the event.

An experienced endurance race runner, Brayden Carle pitched the event to the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality’s (NRRM) recreation department, who were receptive.

He has been organizing the event alongside NRRM recreational department members Krista Pearson, Angela White, Chelsea Moore, Kaylan Enax, along with BC Parks, Northern Rockies Fire Rescue and local business the Tetsa River Lodge in making his vision become a reality.

Carle says a key to success in endurance racing is one has to be “a little crazy.”

“I just want to push my limit a little further,” said Carle. “If I don’t break then, try again or try harder. A few years ago, I attempted an ultramarathon with a friend of mine, and we weren’t able to finish. I guess that chip has been on my shoulder, and so I’m trying to get better every year.”

Carle told Energeticcity.ca that in preparation for the event, he runs three to four times weekly and as much as 40 kilometres over the course of a week.

Registration for the event is $50. Carle says water stations will be available throughout, and BC Parks staff will be on site to ensure participants’ safety.

“We’re going to have fueling stations out there,” said Carle. “But, it is recommended [people] bring water, gear and prepare for any weather.”

The Summit Run-It Further Race takes place on Saturday, June 20th. Registration will close on Monday, June 8th.
To register, visit the NRRM’s registration page or call the recreation department at (250) 774-2541 extension 1.
