FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — As many as five players from the Fort St. John Senior Flyers – past and present – could be among the greatest players to suit up in the North Peace Hockey League (NPHL).

Chris Clegg, the NPHL’s lead statistician for fan page NPHL Fan Zone, is busy putting together a list of the top 100 players in the NPHL’s history.

The league began in 1954, and has existed in some form for seven decades. The NPHL currently has nine teams, including the Dawson Creek Canucks and Fort St. John Flyers.

The final list will be released in January, with anywhere between three and five Fort St. John Senior Flyers’ alumni potentially being honoured.

“The list is not 100 per cent finalized,” said Clegg in a chat with Energeticcity.ca. “Fort St. John will have three, four, five players on the list, most likely.”

Clegg said the inspiration to put together a list of the top 100 players came in conversations with former NPHL president Jack McAvoy.

After speaking with “dozens and dozens” of league pundits and fans, Clegg put together a top 105 list, narrowing it down to 100.

To qualify, a player must have played at least three complete seasons in the NPHL, with championships, all-star appearances and season-end awards taken into account.

While statistics will be considered, many were unknown during the 1950s, according to Clegg.

The final decision will remain with Clegg, who will be looking at the criteria listed above.

The top 100 list of players will be released on Wednesday, January 28th on the South Peace News of High Prairie’s website.
