His former guidance counsellor Ryan Pearce could see Johnson was a “well-rounded” individual, with personal interests in both music and hockey with the North East BC Trackers program, upon meeting him as a grade 11 student.

“While he was here [he] was a great student from grade 10, 11 and 12,” said Pearce. “It wasn’t too much of a surprise that he was able to get the Governor General award.

“He seems to know sort of where he wants to go and what he wants to do. From what I understand, he seems to be doing very well at the University of Alberta this year.”

According to its website, the award was first given in 1873 by the Earl of Dufferin, and has since become one of the highest honours a student from around Canada can receive.

Johnson received the bronze medal, the highest distinction given to a secondary school student.

Pearce was in attendance, and gave Johnson a congratulations on his award.

Energeticcity.ca reached out to Johnson for comment but did not hear back in time for publication.
