Fort St. John Huskies’ win streak reaches nine games

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Switching clocks back from spring to fall time meant little to the Fort St. John Huskies, as they just continue to come out on top.

The team extended its Strike Group North West Junior Hockey League (NWJHL) season-high win streak to nine games with victories against the Fairview Flyers and County of Grande Prairie Wheat Kings on Friday, October 31st and November 1st.

Pups’ head coach Todd Alexander has seen his team mature from one finding its identity to one where teammates know their roles and can rely on one another.

“I think the depth of the club is definitely starting to come along,” said Alexander. “Some guys had a little bit of a later start this year, but are starting to hit their stride.

“It was good to see us get through some adversity. Even on nights when we are not at our best, we figured out how to get a couple of points.”

One instance of overcoming that adversity was Halloween night in Fairview, Alberta against the Flyers, a team that have a combined nine regular season wins since the 2022-23 season.

The scheduled evening did provide the Huskies with a bit of a scare, as the home team pushed the Huskies into overtime. Forward Carver Lequiere had the game winner, as Fort St. John spooked the Flyers by a score of 4-3.

Lequiere also had an assist, and defenceman Adam Bourgeois had a goal and a couple of helpers on the evening. Other goal scorers were Taryn Hoskyn and Brody Mickey.

Alexander said about Bourgeois: “He’s just starting to get the reps, to get up to speed to play at the level he’s at.”

The following evening saw the Huskies storm into Grande Prairie to take on the County of Grande Prairie Wheat Kings for the second time this year.

A two-goal game from Hoskyn provided much of the offensive spark as the Huskies prevailed by a score of 5-2. Other goal scorers included MacCoy Willms, who had a power-play goal, Ryan Bookham and Bourgeois, who had a four-point weekend. 

Fort St. John will look into bringing the win streak to double digits this weekend, starting with the Dawson Creek Kodiaks at the North Peace Arena on Friday, November 7th.

The Wheat Kings will come to town a day later, on Saturday, November 8th, also at the North Peace Arena. Both games are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
