4.14 earthquake recorded east of Wonowon near Highway 97

The BC Energy Regulator has recorded a 4.14 seismic event east of Wonowon near Highway 97 near a well being prepared for production.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — An earthquake with a magnitude of more than four was recorded in the Peace River region this morning near Wonowon.

In a September 29th Facebook post, the BC Energy Regular stated it was aware of a 4.14 seismic event that occurred east of Wonowon just before 6:30 a.m. on September 29th.  

“While there was no hydraulic fracturing happening in the area, there is a nearby well where the operator is preparing the well for production,” the regulator stated.

According to the BC Energy Regulator’s seismicity map, the quake was recorded near Kobes and Highway 97.

A 2.15 magnitude earthquake was also recorded in the same area on September 28th.

No information was provided by the regulator regarding whether any damage was caused by the quake. 
According to Earthquakes Canada, the September 29th event was “lightly felt” in Fort St. John, and there have been no reports of damage, “and none would be expected.”
