FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Fuel Good Day is back today, with fundraising events taking place at Co-op gas bars in both Fort St. John and Fort Nelson.

Fuel Good Day, launched by Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) in 2017, is an annual fundraising event where participating Co-op gas bars donate a portion of fuel and product sales to local charities and non-profits in their communities.

At the 114th Avenue Fort St. John Co-op Gas Bar and car wash, proceeds will benefit the School District 60 Band.

At this branch, the Co-op will donate 10 cents from every litre of fuel sold, along with $2 from every in-store car wash and $1 from every slushie, ice cream and coffee sold.

A barbecue by donation will also be held at the 114th Avenue site from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., with all proceeds going to the Energetic Edge Cheer Association, which provides both recreational and ‘all-star’ competitive cheerleading programs in the community.

In Fort Nelson, the Co-op Gas Bar at 5331 50th Avenue is raising funds for North Paw Animal Rescue, which provides refuge, food, supplies and veterinary care to cats and dogs in the Northern Rockies.

Donations will come from 10 cents per litre of fuel sold, $1 from every slushie, ice cream and coffee sold, and a barbecue by donation from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

“Come hungry and with empty tanks, and leave knowing you made a difference,” the Co-op said in a Facebook post.

According to the Fort St. John Co-op, last year’s Fuel Good Day raised $4,352.11 for the Fort St. John Association for Community Living, which celebrated its 65th anniversary earlier this year; Fort Nelson Playschool; and the Wellness Truth and Family Foundation.

In 2023, $2,453.04 was raised for the Silver Willow 4-H Club.

According to FCL, Fuel Good Day has raised more than $4.9 million across western Canada for local charities, food banks, schools, healthcare groups, animal shelters and other community organizations.

FCL chief executive Heather Ryan said the event reflects the organization’s community commitment.

“As a co-operative, we are committed to giving back to the communities we serve, and Fuel Good Day is one of the ways we do that,” Ryan said.
