Thunderstorm warnings and watches issued across northeast

Environment Canada has issued thunderstorm warnings and watches across northeast B.C. due to a major storm.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. —  A large part of northeast B.C. is under thunderstorm warnings and watches as a major storm rolls through. 

According to Environment Canada, the north Peace River region is experiencing a severe thunderstorm warning due to a severe storm in the region moving north to Fort Nelson. 

The storm is capable of producing “pea to dime-sized hail” and heavy rain, Environment Canada warned.

“A line of strong thunderstorms has developed located around 12 km northeast of Simpson Ranch and are tracking northeasterly at around 20 km/h,” Environment Canada’s weather alert stated at 2:11 p.m. 

“These storms are expected to cross Highway 97 within the next hour.”

The alert warns of heavy rain possibly causing flash flooding and “significant reductions to visibility.”

No end date was provided for the alert, however the seven-day forecast for Fort St. John shows a chance of thunderstorms into the morning of June 25th and a change to showers into the evening of June 26th.
