FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The regional district is weighing two designs to replace a closed community hall in Golata Creek.

During the May 22nd regional board meeting of the Peace River Regional District (PRRD), the directors accepted two concept designs for the Golata Community Space Project.

The designs come after the regional board approved community engagement in Golata Creek about the future of what is currently the Golata Creek Community Hall, which was closed indefinitely in 2022 and is slated for demolition in the summer of 2025.

The designs were based on the results of a community survey, with 50 per cent of respondents stating they wanted the design to feature a new facility to replace the community hall, and 59 per cent wanting a new outdoor recreation space.

Fifty per cent of respondents ranked a kitchen, bathrooms, children’s play space, meeting room and bar area as their top five spaces, and those interested in a new outdoor space ranked picnic shelter and tables, playground, outhouse, fire pits and a multipurpose sports field highly.

From these results, as well as feedback on desired cost and taxation impact, two designs were generated, with one featuring a small hall and the other an outdoor recreation space.

At a to-be-scheduled community meeting, the designs, costs and taxation implications will be presented to the residents of Golata Creek, with more feedback to be collected at that time to determine which design is selected.
