FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The Fort St. John Women’s Resource Society has received over $12,000 from March’s 100 Women Who Care event.

The 100 Women Who Care event, held on the evening of Tuesday, March 11th at the Lido Theatre, featured three nominee organizations based in Fort St. John presenting to attendees about their groups before holding a vote to determine which organization would receive all the funds.

“It was really good to have the opportunity to see all these women together, supporting their community,” said the society’s manager of fundraising and community engagement, Estefania Albornoz.

Albornoz said this is the third time the society has been nominated for the prize, but this is its first win.

“We are thrilled with this fundraising effort, we appreciate the women who showed up last night, donating $100 and an hour of their time to listen to three amazing nonprofits here in town,” said Albornoz.

With an admission price of $100, the event aimed to raise at least $10,000, but over 120 attendees on the night increased the awarded price to a total of $12,400.

The FSJ Senior Citizens Association, North Peace Pregnancy Care Center, and the Women’s Resource Society were the three organizations nominated for the prize.

“It was not an easy decision, we value and respect all the work from the other two nominees and to be chosen last night, well, it gives us a lot of joy,” said Albornoz.

According to Albornoz, the money will support Sky’s Place, the society’s second-stage housing program for women escaping violence.

“We provide services for moms and their kids to give them the tools to have a better life and to heal after what they experienced,” said Albornoz.

She says she looks forward to showing the results of the society’s work with the funds at the next 100 Women Who Care event in September.
