FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A new president has been appointed by the Fort St. John Classic Cruisers Club.

The club desperately needed a new president and treasurer due to vacancies in the positions after the club’s acting president, Cameron Alexander, resigned in January to pursue personal interests.

Matthew Derkach, a 20-year resident of Fort St. John and a very active car enthusiast in the city for 10 years, volunteered to become the club’s new president.

Derkach also expressed his appreciation to Alexander and the club’s former treasurer, Sue Alexander, for their work in the organization.

“On behalf of the Fort St. John Classic Cruisers, we would like to thank Cam and Sue for doing a fantastic job,” said the post.

Marcel Kristoff, another 20-year resident, agreed to become the club’s new treasurer and secretary.

In the hopes of filling the vacant positions, the club hosted a public general meeting on February 11th at the Minute Muffler and Brake repair shop.

During the meeting Brian Fietz-Strelaev, a club member and owner of the repair shop, explained the importance of the positions in making club events happen.

“I pretty much just told everybody these events aren’t possible without people,” said Strelaev.

“Everybody sure seems to enjoy it when it’s happening, unfortunately, a lot of them don’t understand what it takes to make it happen.”

Strelaev expressed his relief after the positions were filled, ensuring the club would a be part of the city’s Canada Day celebrations.

“I’m quite pleased that people stepped up to make this event go,” said Strelaev.
