Final vote count nears completion in B.C. provincial election

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Elections BC is nearing completion of the final count of votes cast in the 2024 Provincial General Election. 

Final counts of all votes, including absentee ballots and vote-by-mail ballots, will be completed by Elections BC by end of day on October 28th, 

Initial counts completed on October 19th left the election too close to call, with 57.45 per cent of the provincial voting population turning out to cast their ballots on or before voting day. 

With recounts in Juan de Fuca-Malahat and Surrey City Centre completed on October 27th, only five electoral districts remain with incomplete vote counts. Results for these counts will be available with hourly updates on Elections BC. 

As of 10:45 a.m., the New Democratic Party (NDP) has 45 members elected, and is leading in one incomplete electoral district. 

The Conservative Party has had 41 members elected, and is leading in four incomplete electoral districts. The Green Party has two members elected, and is not leading in any incomplete districts. 

With just over two million votes cast in the provincial election, the NDP have received 44.8 per cent of the vote, the Conservative Party have received 43.3 per cent, and the Green Party received 8.2 per cent of the provincial vote.

To form a majority government, a political party must win 47 seats in the legislature. As both the NDP and the Conservative Party are unlikely to achieve this number, one of the parties may need to seek the support of the two Green Party MLAs to form government.
