Literacy and Disability Employment Month proclaimed in Fort St. John

The council of the City of Fort St. John has declared the month of September 2024 to be Literacy and Disability Employment Month.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The council of the City of Fort St. John has declared the month of September 2024 to be Literacy and Disability Employment Month.

During the August 26th regular council meeting, Mayor Lilia Hansen and council reviewed two proclamation requests, one from the Fort St. John Literacy Society and one from WorkBC’s Fort St. John centre. 

Throughout September, the Literacy Society has plans for several fundraisers and events, as well as a number of programs aimed at residents of all ages.

The society is participating in the province-wide Literacy is Life campaign to raise awareness of the importance and multifaceted nature of literacy in the modern world.

As part of this campaign, Taylor Mills, the society’s program coordinator, appeared before the mayor and council to ask that the city officially proclaim September as Literacy Month.

Anne McMenamin, client services manager at the Fort St. John WorkBC Centre, also presented to council, highlighting the centre’s work since 2019.

The proclamation, along with an already planned purple light-up of the Centennial Park stage on September 7th, will raise awareness of the benefits of developing a diverse workplace. 

The mayor and council accepted both proclamations, and September 2024 will be Disability Employment and Literacy Month in the City of Fort St. John.
