McKenna was inspired to become a nurse by her grandmother, one of the women who helped her become bold and confident in her life and career.

“She’s an old farm lady and a nurse as well, so she was a big reason as to why I went into nursing,” McKenna said.

Today, McKenna continues to work as a community nurse, conducting home visits for patients around Fort St. John.

This year, McKenna purchased her own acreage in Fort St. John, as well as chickens and a dog.

McKenna said these are all accomplishments of which she is very proud and that drive her to continue to be bold in her daily life.

McKenna explained that she felt bashful about being July’s Bold Woman of the Month but was honoured that someone thought of her in that way.

“I feel like I’m on the right track, if I inspire somebody else to do better in their lives, that makes me feel pretty good,” McKenna said.

For McKenna, being bold means prioritizing teamwork and compassion in all things. McKenna expressed the importance of such qualities, drawing on her years as a healthcare worker to explain the importance of collaboration.

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help. There’s always someone who’s willing to help you out and wants to see you succeed and do good,” McKenna said.

“When people do nice things for you, I think it really inspires you to do better for everybody else, too,” McKenna said.
