Former Huskies captain Kurtis Lee commits to VIU Mariners

Former Fort St. John Huskies captain Kurtis Lee will continue his hockey career on Vancouver Island.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Former Fort St. John Huskies captain Kurtis Lee will continue his hockey career on Vancouver Island.

According to a Facebook post by the Huskies, the 22-year-old from Whitehorse, Yukon has committed to playing for the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners for the 2024-25 season.

Hockey statistics website Elite Prospects says Lee scored seven goals and had 11 assists for 18 points in 14 games for Fort St. John in 2023-24.

He added nine points in 11 playoff games as the Huskies fell short in the North West Junior Hockey League (NWJHL) finals to the La Crete Lumber Barons. 

Lee joined the Huskies during the 2020-21 season, appearing in 2 games and scoring a goal.  

The 5 foot 10 forward blossomed the next two years, scoring 62 goals and 89 assists as Fort St. John captured the tail end of four consecutive titles.

Lee will join a VIU Mariners squad that finished at the top of the five-team British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) with 17 wins and 3 losses, beating the University of Victoria Vikes by five points.

The Mariners also defeated the Vikes in the playoffs, capturing the league title.
