UPDATE: Over 4,200 customers without power in Fort St. John and area

A motor vehicle collision has caused two large power outages in Fort St. John and the area.

UPDATE #4 (6:15 p.m.): Power has been restored to all customers in the Fort St. John area.

UPDATE #3 (1:30 p.m.): BC Hydro has restored power to the first outage. The outage in Charlie Lake is still expected to continue until at least 7 p.m. local time. The times listed on the B.C. Hydro website is Pacific time and not the time in Fort St. John. Two separate accidents caused the two different outages. We are still waiting for official details about what happened with both motor vehicle collisions.

UPDATE #2 (12:30 p.m.): The Ministry of Transportation is reminding drivers that several traffic signals are out along the Alaska Highway and that more signals could stop working as backup power runs out. Drivers are reminded to use the four-way stop procedure at any intersection where the traffic signals are not working.

UPDATE: Hydro says the outage in the Charlie Lake area may take until 7 p.m. to restore. BC Hydro’s website lists all times in Pacific Time.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – A motor vehicle collision has caused two large power outages in Fort St. John and the area.

The first outage started just after 4 a.m., with the second happening at 5 a.m. The two outages combined have knocked out power to over 4,200 customers in the area.

Crews are on the scene working to repair the first outage. That outage covers an area south of 117th ave, west of 84th street, east of the Old Fort Road and North of 79th ave. Hydro estimates that power for that area will be restored by 2:30 p.m. local time Sunday.

There is no estimate for when power will be restored in the second outage. That outage covers much of Charlie Lake. Crews are expected to arrive at around 11 a.m. local time to start repairs.

At this time, we do not have any official information about the collision that caused both of these outages. Once we have more information, we will post an update.
