FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A father and daughter from England recently made a stop in Fort St. John as part of the BBC show Race Across the World.
The show started in 2019 and features teams of two racing across an area of the world using any means of transportation other than commercial air travel without a phone.
The teams are racing across Canada, starting in Vancouver, in series three, which is currently airing.
In an episode that aired on April 5th, teammates Claudia and Kevin, a father and daughter duo, stayed at Muncho Lake overnight before heading to Fort St. John during the third leg of the race. They worked at Mighty Peace Brewing to earn some extra money in the city before heading to Spruce Grove, Alberta and, eventually, Banff by car.
The race’s first leg was from Vancouver to Tlell on Haida Gwaii, and racers chose to hitch a ride and take ferries to reach their destination.
In the second episode, teams needed to reach Dawson City, Yukon. Again teams were slowed by the lack of public transportation, but all five teams made it to the city by way of cars and ferries.
The third leg of the race required teams to make it to Banff, Alberta, again being helped by kind Canadians along their way.

In Europe, public transit, including buses and trains, is well-funded and readily available compared to Canada, where it is much harder to travel between cities, even with a smartphone.

Each of the contestants in Race Across the World were surprised at this revelation and often relied on the kindness of strangers to get to their next destination.
The next leg of the race, airing on April 11th on BBC Two, will have the contestants heading to Churchill, Manitoba.
