In response to the Federal Government’s Bill C-18, also known as the Online News Act, Meta has decided to block Canadians from accessing news on Facebook and Instagram. Even if you try to share a link from a news site, your post will be blocked.

Here are some steps you can take to keep up to date with local news:

  • Bookmark your favourite news website on your browser
  • Follow news organizations on other social platforms
  • Sign up for free newsletters

What is Media Literacy?

With access to news being more complicated, another important aspect to address is media literacy. In our current digital age, many people can claim to be a reliable source of information and make it look convincing. Here are some tips on how you can be more media literate and avoid false information:

  • Look at who is sharing the information and determine if they are a reputable source. Someone with professional experience is more likely to know what they are talking about than someone random online with no credentials.
  • Don’t rely on just one source. If you hear news from someone, check to see if other outlets are reporting something similar.
  • Question what the person sharing the news has to gain from lying. People can be motivated to lie about certain stories for various reasons.

At Energeticcity.ca, our goal is to share news and information that is accurate and in a timely manner. If you ever have any questions about our coverage or notice any mistakes, feel free to contact us at 250-787-7100 or email us at contact@energeticcity.ca
