FSJ construction company fined $30K+ for scaffolding issues

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A Fort St. John construction company has been fined more than $30,000 because of a scaffolding issue at a construction site.

WorkSafeBC imposed a $30,535.52 fine on Northern Legendary Construction on April 23, 2026, as it observed that scaffolding was “too close” to the edge of an excavation.

According to WorkSafeBC, the excavation was not reviewed by a qualified professional and the walls were vertical in some sections.

It said the construction firm failed to ensure, before worker entry, its excavation was sloped, shored and not supported as required, which is a “high-risk violation.”

In addition, the firm failed to ensure that excavation work was carried out in accordance with the written instructions of a qualified and registered professional when a structure is adjacent to the excavation. WorkSafeBC said these were repeated violations.

Northern Legendary Construction is also looking to amend a zoning bylaw and the Official Community Plan to build a 66-unit manufactured home park in Fort St. John. A public meeting on the proposed amendments was held on July 13 to give the community an opportunity to share their insights.
