FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — May’s Youth Athlete of the Month wasn’t the sporty type – but that’s changed since he’s hit the ice.

Carson Beaugie is a pint-sized hockey player, having just completed his first season in the Fort St. John Flyers’ Timbits hockey program.

His mom, Ariadne Scoble, said she and the five-year-old’s father don’t have much interest in sports.

But Carson’s world changed when he first saw his uncle on the ice in Edmonton, where he plays for a team in Spruce Grove.

“[Carson] got to watch him play,” said Scoble. “That is how he decided he wanted to play hockey, so we put him in.”

Timbits hockey is a nationally recognized program established in the 1980s that provides youngsters with their first opportunity to take to the ice.

Notable alumni include National Hockey League superstar Sidney Crosby.

Scoble said her son tried each position throughout the season, but told Energeticcity.ca he likes playing goaltender.

She also saw a lot of sportsmanship throughout the season, even being worried about collisions with opposing players.

“It didn’t matter if the person ran into him or he ran into them, he was always making sure that they were okay,” said Scoble. “If he hit a girl, he felt so bad, and he made sure she was okay, and [even] helped her to the bench.”

Mom believes her son does have a future in the sport, as long as he wants to give it a shot. A big highlight of his season was his hockey uncle coming to town to watch him play.

“He definitely wants to play again next year, so I told him he can,” said Scoble. “I am sure he will continue on. The minute they were done, he asked: ‘So can I play again next year?’”

Carson will receive a $100 gift card courtesy of Fort Motors and have a feature story on Energeticcity.ca.
