Ultimate Fighting Championship honours Tumbler Ridge shooting victim at recent show

TUMBLER RIDGE, B.C. — Mixed martial arts promotion, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), honoured a victim of the Tumbler Ridge shooting at a recent show.

During its UFC Fight Night event on Saturday, February 21st, Maya Gebala’s name was etched alongside the top of the cage entrance during the card in Houston, Texas.

Gebala was one of the victims of 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, who killed eight people and injured countless others in the attack on a residence and at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

Gebala had brain surgery in late February and is currently in hospital. 

In a Facebook post on February 21st, Maya’s father, David Gebala, wrote how appreciative he was of the entire UFC organization, writing it has been “truly amazing.”

“Big shout out to the UFC for doing this for our amazing little warrior,” David put in the post. 

The card at the Toyota Center featured the main event of Sean Strickland against Anthony Hernandez. Strickland won by technical knockout in the first round.
