Firefighter hit by passing vehicle while attending Highway 97 incident

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — A firefighter was struck by a passing vehicle while attending to an incident near Groundbirch this morning. 

At before 8 a.m. on Wednesday, October 29th, Dawson Creek Fire Rescue crews were on the scene of a single-vehicle incident at Highway 97 south and 269^th Road in Groundbirch when one of its team was hit by a passing vehicle.

The injured firefighter was transported first to Chetwynd General Hospital and then onto Prince George for treatment. 

BC Emergency Health Services paramedic public information officer Brian Twaites told Energeticcity.ca that it received the call at 7:40 a.m. and sent two ambulances with primary care paramedics to the scene.

Twaites said the firefighter was in a “serious but stable condition.”

In a media release issued at about 4:30 p.m. on Facebook, the City of Dawson Creek Fire Rescue said it would not be releasing any further details “at this time.”

However, it did thank the paramedics and police officers, as well as the civilians on scene, who assisted with the injured firefighter’s treatment. 

“We ask the public to please slow down, move over and use extreme caution when approaching emergency scenes to help protect those working to keep our roads safe,” the release reads.

“Our thoughts are with our injured member, their family, and our entire fire department family during this difficult time.”
