FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Firefighters are warning motorists and residents in the Fort Nelson area to expect to see smoke in the region ahead of the weekend due to some pile burning.

According to a press release from the Prince George Fire Centre, BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) members will be burning three piles of debris near the Northern Rockies Regional Airport on Friday, March 14th.

The burning is reportedly being done to reduce the amount of flammable material near the airport in the lead-up to the 2025 wildfire season.

Last year’s fire season saw Fort Nelson evacuated for much of May, and the Northern Rockies Regional Airport was a key location in beating back the blaze that caused the evacuation.

“Pile burning will only proceed if conditions are favourable,” the press release reads. “BC Wildfire Service personnel will carefully prepare, control and monitor these piles at all times.”

Anyone who suspects they’ve seen a wildfire is urged to report it to BCWS by calling 1-800-663-5555.
