RCMP Indigenous Pre-Cadet Program now open to new candidates

VICTORIA, B.C. — The RCMP is now accepting applications for the Indigenous Pre-Cadet Program for people of First Nation, Inuit, or Métis descent.

Candidates will learn how to work as part of a policing team, an introduction to the Criminal Code and RCMP policy, physical fitness and drill, and skills to help them apply to be police officers.

“The Pre-Cadet Program is a great opportunity for Indigenous Peoples who are interested in policing to gain first-hand knowledge into law enforcement,” according to RCMP Constable Cole Brewer.

Brewer currently leads the RCMP’s Indigenous and Community Policing Unit in West Shore. 

The West Shore RCMP currently has two civilian employees, Shania Luna and James Lieph, who graduated from the Pre-Cadet Program and are working with the West Shore RCMP team.

“The experiences gained through this program led me to working with West Shore RCMP. The connections I have made through the program and the West Shore RCMP community have been invaluable,” said Luna.

The program includes a three-week training session at the RCMP Training Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan.

“The Indigenous Pre-Cadet Program took me from wondering if a career in policing was right for me to knowing it’s what I want to do,” said Lieph. 

Applicants must be Canadian citizens between 19 and 29 years of age, be able to pass a security check, and have graduated from secondary school.

Applications for the Spring 2025 session will close on October 31, 2024.
