New Restrictions for Fort Nelson Area Wildfires

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) has issued an update to restricted areas due to Fort Nelson area wildfires.

The new area restriction map for the wildfires in the Fort Nelson area begin August 2nd (BC Wildfire Service)

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) has issued an update to restricted areas due to Fort Nelson area wildfires.

Restrictions were first issued in May after wildfires ignited in Nogah Creek and Patry Creek, signifying the need for the prohibitions.

According to the BCWS, the trimmed-down area for the restrictions were made to “reflect the continued need to protect the public in areas where there are ongoing fire suppression activities” and “hazardous fire behaviour conditions.”

The newly updated restrictions include less of the southern portion of Highway 77. Northbound conditions from DriveBC’s website say there is “limited visibility due to smoke” and no stopping due to the wildfire activity.

Travel to the affected areas without written authorization of officials is in violation of the Wildfire Act, unless the intent is:

  • Travelling to or from a person’s residence;
  • Using a highway as defined in the Transportation Act;
  • Entering the area as a person acting in an official capacity;
  • Entering the area for an approved purpose of supporting wildfire suppression activities;
  •  Entering the area for the purposes of carrying out an industrial activity at a regulated oil and gas site.

Failure to comply with the restrictions can result in fines up to $1,150.
