PRRD offering free consultations to homeowners in wildfire protection
The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) is launching a program to educate residents in protecting their properties from wildfires.

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) is launching a program to educate residents in protecting their properties from wildfires.
The FireSmart campaign emphasizes making small and proactive changes year-round to prepare properties for wildfires.
The changes would help reduce the risk of loss of life and property under extreme and unique conditions.
“The FireSmart program is invaluable to our community. It empowers residents to take proactive steps protecting their homes and loved ones from the increasing threat of wildfires,” said PRRD Chair Brad Sperling.
The PRRD says the region faces a unique wildfire risk due to drought levels, strong winds and having an intersection of wildland and urban environments.
The campaign involves homeowners booking free consultations with wildfire experts from Mammoth Forestry. The experts will review the property to determine risks and provide tailored recommendations based on their needs.
According to their website, Mammoth Forestry, based in Fort St. John, was founded in 2020 by twin brothers Craig and Mitch Wilson to work with local governments, First Nations, and industries to help prepare for wildfires.

“By participating in this program, we are strengthening our regional resilience and ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities,” said Sperling.
The program also offers special support for seniors and others with mobility concerns who may find it difficult to carry out FireSmart activities.
The PRRD’s goal is to make 60 rural properties within the regional district area ‘firesmart,’ with a focus on the most vulnerable.
“We are also very excited to offer additional support for seniors and people with mobility considerations this year, as these are important members of our community who require extra care,” said Sperling.
Consultations can be scheduled after completing an online form on the PRRD’s website or calling Mammoth Forestry at 250-467-4180.
